Joe Wah Gow House, Long Tou Wan

Joe Wah Gow house
"Towers, or diao lou (碉樓), were designed to provide a family with refuge in case of bandit attack. Of course, not all huaqiao would have been able to build such houses or towers, while others would have simply built a new and/or larger traditional house. In addition to these choices, the wealthy might build a completely foreign-style house or mansion. This the Kwok family did in the Liang Du village of Zhuxiuyuan (竹秀園), as well as the Ma family in neighbouring Heng Mei and Joe Wah Gow in Long Tou Wan village, Long Du."
Michael Williams, Returning home with glory: Chinese villagers around the Pacific, 1849 to 1949 (榮歸故里:太平洋地區的中國僑鄉 1849–1949), Hong Kong University Press, Hong Kong, 2018, p.79.
