Once you find a Treasure of interest, you will see that it is linked to one or more short Thematic Essays. These essays provide historical background and context, as well as suggestions for further reading if you wish to explore the topic in more depth.

Treasures are also linked to other Treasures that are related in some way, allowing you to follow connections across people, places, and themes.

When using the Map to search remember to scroll down to see below the map those images flagged within the current map.

Wherever Chinese writing appears, an English translation is provided — simply follow the link to Chinese Texts. The Chinese Texts link leads to original inscriptions, documents, and their translations.

In addition, many Treasures are linked to the Organisations that currently host them, the Historical Person who once owned or used it, or the local researchers, historians, archaeologists, descendants, etc (Practitioners) who have helped preserve these treasures of the scattered legacy of Chinese Australian history and heritage.

Regions and Places

To date, over 185 individual places have been mapped on Scattered Legacy. For the purposes of this database the eight major cities have been designated as their own regions and separate suburbs or locations within these urban areas are not distinguished. Outside of these, 24 regions have been designated as patterns of settlement that made sense to the communities of Chinese Australians living within them. The specific places are only those with a Treasure and more will be added as more Treasures are forthcoming.
