Cities hosted a wider variety of businesses, many of which served those in the rural areas.

In the late nineteenth century, Chinese merchants established numerous stores across rural Australia, extending a commercial network that had long been centred in urban hubs such as Melbourne and Sydney. Many of these firms engaged in international trade, importing goods from Hong Kong and distributing them to regional outlets. Beyond retailing, they became vital centres for community life—handling remittances on a district basis, offering support to fellow migrants, and acting as local leaders in the districts societies. The banana trade was especially significant, underpinning the rise of the Wing Sang company which laid the groundwork for what evolved into the Big Four department store. Thus, the Chinese store served both as an economic enterprise and a social institution linking local and transnational networks.

Other urban based businesses included furniture factories, laundries and newspapers.
