This illuminated address was presented to W E Johnson for his assistance in getting the Commonwealth Government to pass a ban on opium.

For the Chinese Australian elite anxious both to see China strong again and to stave off the threat of a White Australia opium was seen as debilitating on a number of levels and the push to ban opium was strongly supported by many in the Chinese community. Ironically W. E. Johnson, to whom the illumination is dedicated, was a strong supporter of a White Australia.
