"A large fire on Saturday night burnt down 15 houses at the Chinese Camp. Several stores, opium shops, gambling dens, and the joss-house were burnt."
Launceston Examiner, 20 January 1876, p.2.
"MARYBOROUGH, Friday. Shortly after 10 p.m. to-day an extensive fire occurred in the local Chinese camp and several tenements were totally destroyed. The largest store, owned by See Chung, contained a large stock of fireworks, and the explosions resembled a bombardment. The Joss house was saved with difficulty."
"The Chinatown of Maryborough can now almost be numbered among the antiquities of the town. A narrow lane, running - from Tuaggra street to the park, it was once a town on its own. An old Chinaman or two, waiting for the end, sleep heavily, in their chairs. The joss-house is the only substantial building in the lane. For the rest a few palings thrown together and a piece of tin does service as a residence. The few remaining members of the colony ushered in the New Year, 28th Inst.', with the aid of small white boys, in true China fashion. Crackers were distributed free."
