Haymarket, Sydney

General view of Vegetable, Fruit, Fish and Poultry Markets, Municipal Cold Storage and Municipal Stores in the Haymarket. In 1908, Sydney Municipal Council resumed terrace houses, mills and workshops spread over four acres bounded by Ultimo, Thomas, Hay and Quay streets, including Engine Street. The site was cleared to make way for two new market buildings designed by the City Architect. The first market building opened in 1909 and the second in 1910. Additional market buildings were constructed in the area until 1938.
