Campbell's Creek - Clinker's Hill

"The festival held to commemorate the opening of the joss-house, on Clinker's hill, terminated on Saturday. The rejoicings have occupied four days, during this time nearly the whole of our Chinese population has visited the scene of the jubilee. The temple is devoted to the worship of the deified emperor or general Kwan-ti, who with his son and lieutenant are coarsely depicted on canvas at the back of the altar. This joss-house has been erected by general subscription among the Chinese, and has cost with its ulterior decorations about £250. "

"The Chinese [three who performed special worship] were said to be Melbourne merchants, the wealthiest of their kind in the colony."
