Site of numerous tin mines: Branxholm (Ruby Flat, Fancy Flat), Derby, Garibaldi, Moorina, Weldborough, Gladstone, Scottsdale. All but Derby has numerous Chinese miners often working for tribute and all had a Joss House. As tin mining and the number of residents declined the temple artifacts were moved until only that at Weldborough remained. In 1934 the contents of this last temple were donated to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston where a functioning temple was erected.
Before tin mining there were several goldfields at Brandy Creek, Lefory (Nine Mile Springs), and Hellyer to which Chinese miners were apparently brought by a Launceston company.
"Movements of the Chinese Digger. About a dozen Chinese diggers who have been employed for a considerable time at Brandy Creek have arrived at head quarters— the stores of Messrs Peters, Barnard, & Co. They have not been so successful as those at Nine Mile Springs, but still they brought up between £50 and £60 worth of very fine bright gold with them. Amongst this is a flattened out nugget weighing about half an ounce."
