The company was originally founded by Tom See Poy and a few countrymen as 'Kam Woh Store' in 1882. After operating for three years, See Poy bought the shares from his partners who returned to China and renamed it 'See Poy & Co'.
His children succeeded the company after he passed away in 1925 and developed See Poy & Son into one of the largest department stores in Northern Queensland, selling products a wide range of products to local and Chinese customers. A two-storey new building was constructed in 1930 with reinforced concrete and became a focal point in Innisfail. The company operated until 1981 and the site has turned into a Coles supermarket.
