Wah Shing Laundry
Although such laundries as Wah Shing's were not numerous they nevertheless attracted occasional attacks such as a 1908 article that claimed Chinese-run laundries in Hobart were undercutting local women, particularly poor and widowed washerwomen, by working longer hours for lower costs. It argued that Chinese labour made it impossible for women to compete, depriving them of vital income needed for rent and food. The piece condemned both government inaction and customers who patronised Chinese laundries to save money, and called for restrictive legislation—modelled on Victorian laws—to limit Chinese competition.
