“The Hill End Observer states that a new Joss-house was opened with great solemnity by the Celestials at Tambaroora on Thursday week. The occasion was observed as a general holiday, and the Chinamen mustered in large number, everyone bringing an offering, however small its intrinsic value, and laying it upon the altar. Roast pork, and nothing less than " the whole animal," appeared to the European observer to be a most important feature in the celebration ; and John was very polite and pressing in his attention to strangers, particularly to ladies whom curiosity attracted to the scene. In the evening there was great feasting and rejoicing over the baked meats, &c-, and any number of Chinese crackers were let off during the day."
