"Our other sketch gives a glimpse of Murrumbidgee scenery at a point near where the brewery is erected and where the Chinese have erected a temple or joss-house. The latter almost over hangs the bank, and is in a risky place in the event of a flood."

Australian Town and Country Journal, 3 March 1883, p.24.

At Narrandera a fire broke out in the Chinese camp at 2.30 a.m. on October 7. All the buildings but five were destroyed. Sam Yet's store and stock, the joss-house, and a building used for, Masonic purposes were consumed. The estimated loss is £1500. There were no insurances. It is supposed that the fire originated through the bursting of a kerosene lamp. The local fire brigade was on the scene, but could not work the fire engine, as the water is not laid on. They, however, cut away one building, and saved five.
