The Dragon Ball was organised by a group called the Young Chinese Relief Movement, which originally started to raise funds for the war victims in China in 1933-34. It was held annually to raise money for charitable causes in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia until the late 1960s. Local Sydneysiders were invited to attend the ball, and young Australian-Chinese girls were presented as debutants. It was an opportunity for the Chinese community to mingle with the Caucasians.
