Notice
Hereby, the Queensland Parliament has enacted a law strictly prohibiting the sale of
opium. Regarding the people subject to this law and the following:
White people are hereby notified that if there are offenders, they will be dealt with in accordance with
Section 9 of this law. For a first offense,
the fine shall not exceed 100 pounds, and not less than
10 pounds for each case, calculated accordingly, or
imprisonment for one month. If afterwards there is unlawful re-offending,
under this law, imprisonment shall be six months. Everyone should strictly
obey and do not violate. Specially notified.
*Note: The Chinese text on this historical sign is a loose translation of the English text above it and contains several discrepancies (e.g., it cites "Section 9" instead of Section 20, mentions a fine of "10 pounds" instead of 20, and "one month" imprisonment instead of three).
